Dictionary's improvised music is sometimes based on prompts suggested by listeners. These may be concrete or abstract, musical or otherwise; examples of past prompts include "orchestrate a car crash," "Sonic Adventure 3," and "heavily distorted modal music."

A project of Boston-based musician Alma Ramsey (they/them), Dictionary is a hermetic study of the Yamaha Portatone PSR-280, a downmarket keyboard from 2000 complete with tinny General MIDI voices, canned demo songs, and a "DJ Mode" gimmick poorly modeled on keyboard samplers of the previous decade. Supplemented by a TC-Helicon Perform-VE effects unit and an EHX-95000 looper, Ramsey develops these sounds into free-improvised, mixed-fidelity jams spanning synth- & vaporwave with excursions into ambient and club styles, drone, and noise.
